First Day of Competition at the 2016 World Club Championship

2016 WCC First Round

Bangkok, Thailand (December 7, 2016) - The Amazing Kingdom of Thailand 2016 World Club Championship got under way today at Ayodhya Links, with the first of two qualifying rounds providing plenty of low scores and excitement.

Day one got off to a bang when the team from Royal St. George's Golf Club in England got to the par-3 12th, their 3rd hole of the day. Karl Gilbert hit an 8 iron from 170 yards that disappeared into the hole, much to the delight of the team. This came after birdying 10 and 11, putting them 4 under through their first 3 holes. They would end up shooting a 6 under 66, good enough for second place through one round.

The round of the day came from the young lads from Portmarnock in Ireland, who fired off 4 birdies in a row on holes 2 through 5. They went out in 6 under and finished at 7 under 65, a great score for the over 7,000 yard track.

The team from Los Angeles Country Club in California finished the day in 3rd place at 5 under 67, and rounding out the top 4 were the two young guns of the Thai National team. They managed to reach 3 of the 4 par 5s in 2, en route to a 4 under 68, proving that they will be a team to reckon with this week.

Other great shots were provided by Jeff Kiley of Baltusrol in the US, who chipped in on 9 for par then made a bomb for birdie on the par-4 15th. Their team finished at 3 under, good for 5th place.

Competition for the second round of qualifying gets under way tomorrow, with the top 4 teams advancing to the semifinal match play round.
