It's just a fact of life that some golf clubs carry more clout and prestige than others — and therefore, so do their club championships. So what happens when you bring a fistful of club champions together from the finest clubs worldwide to go mano a mano for the right to be called the, "Best of the Best?" You have the 2006 The World Club Championship.

The fourth annual World Club Championship (WCC) took place November 15-17 at South Carolina's Sage Valley Golf Club, the first time the event has been held in the United States, following three years at The Club at Nine Bridges on Jeju Island in South Korea. Honoring one of the oldest traditions in amateur golf, the club champion, this unique event is comprised of 18 clubs from 11 countries invited from GOLF MAGAZINE's 2005 Top 100 Courses in the World list. To be eligible for selection, a course must have a club champion with a partner and both with handicaps of 3 or lower.

Event founder David V. Smith explains, "The World Club Championship began in 2002 at Nine Bridges as a way to celebrate two of golf's greatest enduring traditions: Amateur golfers and the world class clubs to which they belong. We look forward to having the event hosted by clubs around the world for generations to come."

Without giving away the winner, suffice to say, the 2006 competition was the closest and most dramatic in the event's history, featuring a final-round shootout between Pine Valley Golf Club (USA), Royal Melbourne Golf Club (Australia), Durban Country Club (South Africa) and the host club, Sage Valley Golf Club.

The 2006 World Club Championship will air Tuesday, December 5, at 6:00 p.m. EST on the Golf Channel.
